Ride North Norfolk 2023

Ride North Norfolk 2022, Ride cancelled

I am very sorry to say that we have had to cancel this year’s ride , which was due to take place on the 25th August 2022.
We have had a very poor sign-up this year and although we often get people registering over the last two weeks and on the day, it is too risky for us, as a small voluntary organisation, to risk the money and resources needed to put on the event. In line with our ethos of being inclusive we keep prices very low and only just cover our costs.

We will, of course, ensure that everyone who has signed up will receive a full refund, although this may take a few days as it will be processed through British Cycling. This will be a payment to the card that you used to make the initial sign-up payment. If this is an issue please contact me directly at richard@activefakenham.org.uk

There were some particular difficulties this year as well as the obvious ones around COVID etc. Members of the team had health issues early in the year which meant we started the organisation and publicity late. These have been satisfactorily overcome so we are planning to make a special effort with next year’s ride which will be on Sunday 27th August 2023. We hope you will join us next year.

This is the first time we have had to cancel the Ride North Norfolk and we expect it to be an exceptional incident.
I am very sorry we have had to take this action.

You do NOT have to be a member of British Cycling to join the ride or to register online. We are working with British Cycling who are providing online entry systems and insurance, but you do not need to be a member. You will need to register with British Cycling as part of the online sign up process.

What do I do when I arrive?

You must report to the Community Centre, register and receive your welcome pack. Don’t forget to report back at the end of your ride or we will be looking for you.

What can the mechanic help me with?

Every rider will be given an emergency number to contact the mechanic at any stage of the race, should there be any mechanical difficulty. Please try to sort out your own minor problems. Riders should bring their own puncture repair kit and pump, as the mechanic will not be doing this. There will be experienced cyclists going around the route with you who will be happy to help.

What if I haven’t got a bike?

We can help you to hire a bike and some local people may be able to lend bikes on the understanding that if you damage it you get it repaired.

Am I insured, do I need a helmet, can I use TriBars and what happens if I am injured?

The event has £10 million liability insurance through British Cycling. This does not cover damage to your bike or theft of your bike or personal property; you are advised to have your own insurance for this. We have taken every step to ensure that the ride is as safe as possible. You are responsible for your personal safety on the public road. We will have MED-PTS at the community centre. It is a requirement of our insurance and British Cycling that you wear a helmet. If you would like to buy (or possibly borrow) one on the day, please get in touch. TriBars are forbidden by British Cycling and our insurance company.

Can I change the distance/ride I have signed up for?

Yes, this is not a problem. You can sort this out at registration on the day.

I have a food allergy; will this be a problem at the ‘feed stations’?

It may be depending on your allergy. There may be traces of nuts in the flapjack and other snacks (although we have not added them). If you are concerned, please get in touch.

Massage

Short massages will be available from four local professional massage therapists. Each will offer different short massages at low cost. If you have never had a massage, then here’s your chance to find out more and have a try. If you get tired legs or an aching back, or just want to relax, try the massage zone. More details to follow.

Child Trailer Bikes

I have been asked about child trailers on the Fakenham 50. These are ok and are covered by our British Cycling insurance, but you need to make sure they are in good working order and be aware our breakdown rescue service may not be able to carry them back to HQ. As with all riders you need to ensure you ride safely and stick to the guidelines and rules – and, of course have a fun time.

Fakenham is again hosting its annual Easter day of racing for all ages. An exciting day to join in with or to just enjoy the spectacle from one of the local cafes or pubs which adjoin the circuit. The morning is for runners of all ages and abilities and is followed by an afternoon of exciting Criterium cycle road racing. Roads in the town centre are closed for the day as Fakenham plays host to some of the best racing in the region. There is serious racing but also many people join for the personal challenge. The 5 K run is followed by a Fun Run which is particularly popular with children, but also many adults take part. There is even a Toddle’n’Trike for the little ones. Every child participating is given a drawstring goody bag with chocolate and fruit, and of course all runners get a medal for completing the course. There are prizes and trophies for the winners. In the afternoon lightning fast Criterium cycle racing takes place on the one kilometre circuit. Each race lasts forty or fifty minutes so spectators get to see the riders many times. Riders reach speeds of nearly 40mph. Spectators, friends and family can cheer on participants as they ride, sprint, jog or walk round the course. There will be commentary and stalls with food and more. The town centre will be closed to traffic for the day,(8.00am to 6.00pm) The runs and cycle races are official UK Athletics and British Cycling events, and are run under their rules. Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham said, “We are thrilled to bring this popular event back to the town. We try to make it exciting for everyone whether they are joining in or just watching and cheering. This annual event has been going since 2016 and we have had runners in their 80s and cyclists as young as two. Criterium cycle racing is an exciting spectacle as the riders pass close to spectators and because it’s a small circuit can be seen many times during the race. Like all Active Fakenham events we keep prices low and its free to watch. We are particularly proud of our women’s criterium race which has attracted top riders from across the country and beyond but also gives the opportunity for all levels of women riders to take part.” Organisers would like to thank in advance the many people who make this happen and also apologise for any inconvenience for the roads that need to be closed. Registration is now open, and details are on the Active Fakenham website. Numbers of entries are limited but there are likely to be places available on the day. . Notes 1.
