First night sells out - Fakenham Film Festival

First night sells out!

Fakenham’s first film festival is proving popular. The first night was a sell-out with only one ticket left. The programme featured the touching film based in Cromer, Seaside Special as well as short films of the history of Fakenham and a locally made film of the 2024 Fakenham Riverside Festival, Duck and Cardboard Raft Races.

Andy Lawson , the Fakenham Central Cinema Manager said, “We were very pleasantly surprised. For a Tuesday evening in September the turnout was fantastic. We hope people will support the films over the next three Tuesdays. Films start at 7.00pm and booking is available on our website and the Active Fakenham website. It’s very positive to see local people supporting their local cinema. Tickets are only £5”

Richard Crook from Active Fakenham said, “Many local people were able to see themselves and there are many local landmarks to recognise. Each main feature is supported by locally made short films starring people from Fakenham and the surrounding villages. It’s fun to see yourself on the big screen and anyone who has attended an Active Fakenham event since 2014 may find themselves on the screen”. Details are on the Active Fakenham website and social media.

The festival is taking place in the Central Cinema Fakenham over four Tuesday evenings from the 17th September to the 8th October. Films are themed around North Norfolk and Fakenham.. It also showcases some work by talented local film makers.

At the first screening there was a “Red Carpet” event where many people took the opportunity to have their photograph taken by a professional photographer for free. Photos are on the Active Fakenham website.

On Tuesday 24th September the main feature is “Glorious 39” A mysterious drama starring Julie Christie, Bill Nighy, David Tennant and Eddie Redmayne. Locations include Castle Acre, Walsingham Abbey and Salthouse. The short films, made by local videographer Hannah Brodie for Active Fakenham, include Fakenham Music Festival 2017, the Fakenham Easter Sunday Funday 2019 together with some short films from the archive.

“Chicklit “ showing on the 1st October features the Hunny Bell, Holt Bookshop, Blakeney and more. Short films include a new film of the 2024 Ride North Norfolk and the 2014 Fakenham Shopkeepers Olympics.

The final performance on the 8th October has a fascinating documentary about Norfolk’s love of cinema. “The Final Reel” is narrated by john Hurt and features footage from the East Anglian Film Archive. Before this there is a film by local film maker a Norfolk-based sound effects editor, Chris Richmond “A night at the pictures: Fakenham Central cinema” which looks at the history and idiosyncrasies of the Fakenham, Cinema. There may also be other films from the archives.

The Festival is being supported by local groups including the Fakenham Film Society and the Fakenham and District Community Archive. The main feature films are subsidised by Creative Arts East and the festival is sponsored by Aldiss and Stephenson Smart Accountants.

Fakenham is again hosting its annual Easter day of racing for all ages. An exciting day to join in with or to just enjoy the spectacle from one of the local cafes or pubs which adjoin the circuit. The morning is for runners of all ages and abilities and is followed by an afternoon of exciting Criterium cycle road racing. Roads in the town centre are closed for the day as Fakenham plays host to some of the best racing in the region. There is serious racing but also many people join for the personal challenge. The 5 K run is followed by a Fun Run which is particularly popular with children, but also many adults take part. There is even a Toddle’n’Trike for the little ones. Every child participating is given a drawstring goody bag with chocolate and fruit, and of course all runners get a medal for completing the course. There are prizes and trophies for the winners. In the afternoon lightning fast Criterium cycle racing takes place on the one kilometre circuit. Each race lasts forty or fifty minutes so spectators get to see the riders many times. Riders reach speeds of nearly 40mph. Spectators, friends and family can cheer on participants as they ride, sprint, jog or walk round the course. There will be commentary and stalls with food and more. The town centre will be closed to traffic for the day,(8.00am to 6.00pm) The runs and cycle races are official UK Athletics and British Cycling events, and are run under their rules. Richard Crook, from Active Fakenham said, “We are thrilled to bring this popular event back to the town. We try to make it exciting for everyone whether they are joining in or just watching and cheering. This annual event has been going since 2016 and we have had runners in their 80s and cyclists as young as two. Criterium cycle racing is an exciting spectacle as the riders pass close to spectators and because it’s a small circuit can be seen many times during the race. Like all Active Fakenham events we keep prices low and its free to watch. We are particularly proud of our women’s criterium race which has attracted top riders from across the country and beyond but also gives the opportunity for all levels of women riders to take part.” Organisers would like to thank in advance the many people who make this happen and also apologise for any inconvenience for the roads that need to be closed. Registration is now open, and details are on the Active Fakenham website. Numbers of entries are limited but there are likely to be places available on the day. . Notes 1.
